ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a self-taught artist. For the most part, mother nature is my muse. I take keen pleasure in identifying trees and collecting leaves, berries and buds, which I stick in my cahier de botanique. In summer I pick bunches of wildflowers and dry them, to go into tiny bottles and jars. In autumn, the attention is wholly on rust coloured leaves. And all through the four seasons I am as if on the sidelines, a spectator to the changing pattern of the migration of the birds. Watching wildlife is riveting. I have learnt to identify the winged creatures in my backyard. Gulls, egrets, brant geese, Canada geese, mergansers, mallards, loons, starlings, robins, finches, herons, owls. This activity is a by-product of my evening runs by the bay. There are squirrels, raccoons, gophers and skunks too, as our friendly neighbours, but they are mostly active in summer. My travels with my husband are a great source of inspiration. I like painting memories of places I have loved with every bit of my soul and some that I aspire to visit someday.

I paint a varied range of subjects because I do not want to get caught in a rut. I want to try every possible style of art out there, just as I am hungry to learn a little bit of everything. Life is too short of an affair to be pigeonholed.
